Vivek Oberoi Sues for Deepfake Misuse

Vivek Oberoi, an actor and entrepreneur, has filed a civil suit with the India — Delhi High Court to protect his personality and publicity rights. He alleges widespread unauthorized exploitation of his name, image, voice, and likeness, including the creation of AI-generated deepfakes, fake social media accounts on platforms like Meta Platforms — Instagram, and the sale of unauthorized merchandise by entities such as Collector Bazar, ZoomMantra, and India. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction to restrain these defendants from infringing his rights, citing violations of fundamental rights, performer's and moral rights under the Copyright Act, and common law protections. Vivek Oberoi argues that unchecked use of generative AI and deepfake technology poses serious risks to individual privacy and commercial persona, causing irreparable damage to his goodwill and business interests. The India — Delhi High Court is expected to pass orders on this matter, which is part of a growing trend among celebrities like Salman Khan, Asha Bhosle, Aishwarya Rai, and Abhishek Bachchan seeking judicial intervention against digital misappropriation.
