New research led by John Manning from Anna University, in collaboration with Istanbul University's Department of Anthropology, suggests a link between prenatal estrogen exposure and larger brain size in newborn boys. The study, published in Early Human Development, utilized the 2D:4D digit ratio (index to ring finger length) as an indicator of prenatal hormone levels. Higher 2D:4D ratios, indicating greater prenatal estrogen, were associated with larger head circumference in boys, a measure linked to brain size and intelligence. This finding supports the 'estrogenized ape hypothesis' and suggests that the evolutionary drive for larger brains in humans may be connected to biological costs in males, such as increased rates of heart problems, poor sperm counts, and schizophrenia. The research highlights the positive influence of prenatal estrogen on human brain evolution.
