The findings of recurring technical defects in nearly half of Indian aircraft, particularly in India Group and IndiGo, could negatively impact investor confidence in these airlines and the broader Indian aviation sector. Increased regulatory oversight by the India — Directorate General of Civil Aviation (India) may lead to higher operational costs for airlines as they address these issues, but could also improve long-term safety and reliability.

Government data presented in the Lok Sabha revealed that nearly half of the aircraft (377 out of 754) examined across six Indian scheduled airlines since January last year had recurring technical defects. The India Group, including India and Air India — Air India Express, showed the highest proportion of issues, with 191 out of 267 aircraft flagged (72%). IndiGo had the largest number of aircraft reviewed (405) with 148 recurring defects. SpiceJet and Akasa Air also reported issues. India attributed its high numbers to rigorous inspection protocols, stating most defects were low-priority (Category D) items like seats and tray tables, not related to aircraft safety. In response, the India — Directorate General of Civil Aviation (India) significantly increased its regulatory oversight, conducting thousands of inspections and audits, and expanded its technical workforce from 637 to 1,063 sanctioned posts to strengthen regulatory capacity. Despite the findings, the Ministry of Civil Aviation reported a steady decline in overall technical fault cases over the past three years.
