Ghooskhor Pandat Film Title Controversy

The upcoming Netflix film 'Ghooskhor Pandat', starring Manoj Bajpayee and directed by Dheeraj Pandey, has ignited a significant controversy over its title, which translates to 'Corrupt Pandit'. Critics and various community organizations, including the Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Samaj, argue that the title is offensive and hurts religious and caste sentiments by linking a Brahmin identifier with corruption. This backlash has led to widespread protests in states like India — Uttar Pradesh and India — Madhya Pradesh, where effigies of Manoj Bajpayee and Dheeraj Pandey were burnt. Legal actions have been initiated, including an FIR filed at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow against Dheeraj Pandey and his production team, Friday Story Tellers, for allegedly attempting to disrupt social harmony. A writ petition was also filed in the India — Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film's release. In response to the escalating criticism, Dheeraj Pandey and Manoj Bajpayee issued statements acknowledging the hurt caused and announced the temporary removal of all promotional materials. Furthermore, the filmmakers have reportedly informed the India — Delhi High Court of their decision to change the film's title. The Film Makers Combine (FMC) and the Trade unions in India (FWICE) have also raised objections, with FMC issuing a notice to Netflix and Friday Story Tellers for unauthorized use of the title.
