Mumbai Mayor Election: BJP's Ritu Tawde

The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the India — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the India — Shiv Sena (UBT), has announced its candidates for the Mumbai Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts. Ritu Tawade of the BJP has been nominated for Mayor, marking the first time the BJP will hold this position in the India — Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Sanjay Shankar Ghadi of the India — Shiv Sena (UBT) has been named the Deputy Mayor nominee. The elections for these posts are scheduled for February 11, 2026, following the BMC elections on January 15, 2026. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while the India — Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 29 seats, giving the Mahayuti alliance a clear majority. Ritu Tawade, a three-time corporator, is known for her grassroots engagement and administrative experience, having previously chaired the BMC's Education Committee. The Deputy Mayor's tenure will be split among four India — Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators, with each serving for 15 months. The BMC, India's wealthiest civic body, has been functioning without elected corporators since 2022, and the new leadership is expected to focus on governance and development.
