Plateau State Lassa Fever Outbreak

Nigeria — Plateau State has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa fever across seven local government areas, with 11 positive cases and four deaths recorded since December 2025. Dr Nicholas Baamlong, the Commissioner for Health, announced the outbreak and detailed the state's response, which includes activating an incident management team, extensive contact tracing, and deploying rapid response teams. Four fatalities have occurred, including Dr Salome Oboyi, a medical practitioner at Bingham University, who contracted the disease while treating a patient. The state is intensifying surveillance, public health enlightenment, and ensuring the availability of treatment drugs and personal protective equipment at facilities like Jos University Teaching Hospital and Trauma and Specialist Hospital. Residents are urged to follow preventive measures and seek prompt medical attention.
