Iran Sentences Narges Mohammadi to Prison

Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent human rights activist, has been sentenced to an additional seven and a half years in prison by the government of Iran. The new sentence includes six years for 'gathering and collusion to commit crimes' and one and a half years for propaganda activities. She has also been given a two-year travel ban and ordered into two years of internal exile. This development comes as Narges Mohammadi reportedly ended a week-long hunger strike that began on February 2. Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, confirmed the verdict, which can still be appealed. Narges Mohammadi has a long history of activism against Iran's use of the death penalty and mandatory dress codes for women, leading to repeated arrests and imprisonments over the past 25 years. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her work. Her recent arrest in December was for denouncing the suspicious death of human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. Human rights organizations like Amnesty International continue to criticize Iran's human rights record.
