Chile has launched Latam-GPT, an open-source artificial intelligence model developed by the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence. Chilean Science Minister Aldo Valle and President Gabriel Boric emphasized that Latam-GPT seeks to prevent stereotypical depictions of Latin America and position the region as an active player in the future economy. Unlike closed models such as ChatGPT and Alphabet Inc.'s Gemini, Latam-GPT is open for programmers to customize. Contributions to the project came from various entities across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. Although its budget is small, entrepreneurs like El Cuarteto de Nos of Digevo plan to use Latam-GPT for customer service programs, valuing its ability to recognize local slang and idioms. The model is currently trained in Spanish and Portuguese, with future plans to incorporate Indigenous languages.
