Nigeria Suspends Sachet Alcohol Ban

The Nigeria has ordered the United States — Food and Drug Administration to suspend all enforcement actions related to the proposed ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic products. This directive, a joint intervention by the Nigeria — Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Nigeria — Office of the National Security Adviser, stems from grave concerns over economic stability and potential security threats if the ban were enforced without a fully implemented National Alcohol Policy. The government clarified that while the National Alcohol Policy has been signed under President Bola Tinubu's direction, United States — Food and Drug Administration must refrain from sealing factories or warehouses until the policy is fully operationalized. The decision was also influenced by a letter from the Nigeria — House of Representatives (Nigeria) Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control, signed by Deputy Chairman Uchenna Okonkwo, which highlighted existing National Assembly resolutions cautioning against the ban. The Nigeria is reviewing legislative, public health, and economic factors before a final decision.
