Anil Chauhan on India's Strategic Autonomy

Anil Chauhan, India's Chief of Defence Staff, delivered a speech at the 'JAI' seminar organized by United States — United States Southern Command, emphasizing the critical need for India to pursue strategic autonomy and be prepared to act independently in a rapidly evolving global security environment. He highlighted that assumptions about permanent friends or adversaries are increasingly unreliable, with strategic alignments becoming fluid and transactional. Anil Chauhan stressed that partnerships, while valuable, cannot substitute for indigenous capability or the freedom to exercise national choice. He also pointed to emerging global trends such as coercive nationalism, economic weaponization, and the erosion of established norms of state behavior. Anil Chauhan advocated for 'JAI' (Jointness, Aatmanirbharta, and Innovation) as a framework for future readiness, emphasizing that true victory lies in verifiable outcomes and overcoming internal vulnerabilities like outdated doctrines and organizational silos. Dhiraj Seth, Southern Army commander, supported the call for self-reliance.
