Egyptian Artifacts Stolen, Recovered in Australia

A 52-year-old man, Miguel Simon Mungarrieta Monsalve, was charged after allegedly stealing priceless Egyptian artifacts from the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture, Australia — Queensland, Australia. The theft occurred in the early hours of Friday when the suspect allegedly smashed a window and made off with items including a mummy mask, a collar, a necklace, and a wooden cat sculpture. Australian police successfully recovered all the stolen artifacts, with only minor damage, after searching a camper van and later finding the wooden cat sculpture in Miguel Simon Mungarrieta Monsalve's possession. Miguel Simon Mungarrieta Monsalve was arrested on Russell Island and faces charges including breaking and entering and wilful damage. The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology expressed relief at the recovery but noted the items require professional assessment and conservation before being re-displayed.
