The India — Central Board of Secondary Education has announced that it is mandatory for all Class 10 students to appear in the first board examination starting from 2026. This clarification comes after the board received requests from students who wished to skip the first exam. According to India — Central Board of Secondary Education Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, students who do not attempt at least three subjects in the first examination will be placed in the 'Essential Repeat' category and will only be able to take the main examinations the following year. The new policy allows passed and eligible students to improve their performance in up to three subjects (Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages) in the second examination. Students with a 'Compartment' result in the first exam can also appear in the second exam under the 'Compartment' Category. This policy aligns with recommendations from the National Education Policy 2020 to reform board exams.
