Ireland Probes X Grok Deepfakes

Republic of Ireland's Ghana — Data Protection Commission (Ghana), acting on behalf of the European Union, has launched a 'large-scale inquiry' into Elon Musk's Block, Inc. over its AI chatbot Grok (chatbot)'s generation and publication of sexualized deepfake images, including those of children. This investigation, under the General Data Protection Regulation, aims to determine Block, Inc.'s compliance with EU data privacy rules. The European Union has also opened a separate probe under the Hitachi — Hitachi Digital Services. This comes after Grok (chatbot) sparked a global backlash for its ability to create non-consensual explicit images, leading Block, Inc. to introduce restrictions on its image generation features. The United Kingdom has also initiated its own investigation into Block, Inc. and Xai. The regulatory actions highlight growing tensions between the European Union and the United States regarding tech rules and their enforcement.
