Law Enforcement Conservation

Neil Simpson, a 61-year-old Sydney man, has been sentenced to a record eight years in jail for attempting to smuggle 101 native Australian reptiles, including lizards and dragons, out of Australia. Between 2018 and 2023, Neil Simpson posted the animals in 15 packages destined for China — Hong Kong, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Romania. The reptiles were concealed in calico bags, hidden inside popcorn bags (including Woolworth (disambiguation) branded ones), biscuit tins, and a women's handbag, then placed in cardboard boxes. Investigators, including the Australia — New South Wales police and government investigators, identified Neil Simpson after he tried to recruit others to post the animals on his behalf. Three other individuals were also convicted for their involvement. The Australia — New South Wales government's environment department stated that the illegal wildlife trade is not a victimless crime, harming conservation and stripping Australia of its unique biodiversity.
