The partnership between Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas is expected to positively impact the transportation sector in Nigeria by reducing costs and promoting cleaner energy. This initiative, along with government support for infrastructure, could lead to increased efficiency and profitability for transport operators, while also benefiting consumers through lower fares.
The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (NARTO) has announced the successful deployment of 28 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses, a result of its strategic partnership with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG). This initiative has led to a significant reduction in transportation costs by over 30 percent nationwide. The new fleet, comprising various types of CNG/Petrol and CNG/Diesel buses, is actively serving interstate and intracity routes across Nigeria, contributing to safer, cleaner, and more affordable mass transportation. NARTO's National President, Lawal Yusuf Othman, highlighted the 'enormous opportunities' unlocked by this collaboration and confirmed assurances from PiCNG for additional buses. The association also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support of the transport sector through the CNG initiative and road infrastructure projects. Furthermore, NARTO acknowledged Dangote Group's investments in local refining and petroleum distribution, and the Nigeria — Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority's role in fair pricing. Despite these advancements, NARTO faces challenges such as declining revenues, dilapidated fleets, and financing barriers, and is actively seeking solutions, including a fleet replacement financing arrangement with the Nigeria — Government of Lagos State. The event underscores Nigeria's commitment to an energy transition strategy, aiming to reduce dependence on petrol, lower emissions, and cut transportation costs.
