This medical breakthrough could lead to new, accessible mental health treatments, potentially boosting the market for digital health solutions and video games like Tetris. While not directly impacting stock prices, it highlights the growing importance of mental health interventions and the potential for innovative solutions.
A new study led by Professor Emily Holmes of Uppsala University, and funded by Wellcome Trust, has found that playing the classic video game Tetris can significantly reduce distressing memories of trauma and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The trial involved 99 United Kingdom — National Health Service staff who experienced trauma during the Covid-19 pandemic. Participants who underwent the imagery competing task intervention (ICTI) by playing a slow version of Tetris while recalling a traumatic memory experienced 10 times fewer flashbacks within four weeks, with 70% reporting no intrusive memories after six months. This accessible and scalable method is now being explored for broader application.
