The acquisition of Etsy — Depop by EBay is expected to boost EBay's market share among younger demographics and in the secondhand fashion category, leading to a rise in EBay's stock. Etsy's stock also surged as the sale allows it to re-focus on its core business and utilize the proceeds for investments and share repurchases.
EBay has agreed to acquire Etsy — Depop, a secondhand fashion marketplace popular with Gen Z and millennials, from Etsy for $1.2 billion in cash. The deal, expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, aims to help EBay capture a younger demographic and expand its presence in the growing pre-loved fashion market. Etsy — Depop, founded in London in 2011, will retain its name, brand, platform, and culture. Etsy, which acquired Etsy — Depop five years prior for $1.62 billion, is selling the platform to focus exclusively on its core marketplace. Following the announcement, EBay's shares rose over 7%, while Etsy's shares soared nearly 15% in after-hours trading.
