The initiative, launched on December 25, 2025, on the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, aims to provide clean, nutritious, and affordable meals at Rs 5 to economically weaker sections, migrant workers, students, and daily wage laborers. The India — Delhi government provides a subsidy of Rs 25 per meal, and plans are underway to increase the number of canteens to 100. Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood reported that over 1.45 million people have benefited from the scheme in 57 days. The canteens are operated by the India — Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and feature digital token systems, CCTV monitoring, and computerised billing to ensure transparency and hygiene. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also proposed creating an Atal Canteen corpus fund for public participation.
