The United States — National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has updated its method for labeling El Niño–Southern Oscillation and El Niño–Southern Oscillation events, moving from a fixed 30-year average to a relative index, which will likely result in more El Niño–Southern Oscillation and fewer El Niño–Southern Oscillation classifications. This change is due to rapidly warming global waters. An El Niño–Southern Oscillation is forecasted to develop later this year, which could lead to warmer global temperatures in 2027 and potentially set a new global temperature record, as noted by Jennifer Francis of the Woodwell Climate Research Center.
