Somaliland Offers US Minerals, Military Bases

Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, is actively seeking international recognition by offering the United States exclusive access to its mineral resources, including lithium and coltan, and the use of its military bases. This initiative follows Israel's recognition of Somaliland's independence in December 2025, a move that Somalia and the African Union have strongly condemned as a violation of Somalia's sovereignty. Somaliland's President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and Minister of the Presidency Khadar Hussein Abdi have also suggested granting Israel privileged access to minerals and potentially allowing a military presence. The strategic location of Somaliland across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen, a region affected by Houthi rebel attacks, adds to its geopolitical significance. While the United States has not yet formally recognized Somaliland, discussions are ongoing, with former President Donald Trump having previously commented on the issue.
