Meta Platforms Encrypted Messaging Child Safety

Internal documents from Meta Platforms, made public in a Mexico state court case, reveal that executives proceeded with plans to encrypt Facebook Messenger and Instagram direct messages despite internal warnings that it would severely hinder the company's ability to detect and report child exploitation. Monika Bickert, Meta Platforms's head of content policy, called the plan 'irresponsible' in a 2019 internal chat. Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez alleges Meta Platforms allowed predators unfettered access to underage users, leading to real-world abuse. A 2019 internal briefing document estimated a 65% drop in child exploitation reporting to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children if Messenger had been encrypted. Meta Platforms spokesperson Andrew Stone stated that the concerns led to the development of additional safety features before the 2023 launch of encrypted messaging. The trial is the first of its kind against Meta Platforms to reach a jury, amidst a wave of global litigation and regulatory threats related to youth welfare on its platforms.
