The market for GLP-1 drugs is experiencing intense competition, leading Novo Nordisk to slash prices for Semaglutide and Semaglutide. This move is expected to increase market access and affordability for patients, but could also trigger a price war, impacting the revenues and stock prices of both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly and Company.
Novo Nordisk announced plans to significantly cut the U.S. list prices of its popular weight-loss drug Semaglutide and diabetes drug Semaglutide by up to 50%, effective January 1, 2027. Semaglutide's price will be halved, and Semaglutide's will drop by 34-35%, both listing at $675 per month. This strategic move aims to regain market share from rival Eli Lilly and Company, which has taken the lead with its drugs Tirzepatide and Tirzepatide. The price cuts are intended to enhance affordability and accessibility for insured patients, particularly those with high-deductible health plans. Novo Nordisk also plans to introduce lower prices for these drugs within the United States — Medicare system. This decision comes amidst growing demand for GLP-1 drugs and increasing pressure to lower healthcare costs in the United States. Both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly and Company have previously offered discounts to cash-paying patients and through government initiatives like TrumpRx.
