The registration of Maruti Suzuki's project as the world's first modal shift transportation project to generate carbon credits under Verra's VCS program is a positive development for the company, enhancing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) profile. This initiative is expected to generate 1.7 lakh carbon credits, which can be monetized or used to offset the company's own emissions, potentially leading to financial benefits and improved investor perception.
Maruti Suzuki's in-plant railway siding in Gujarat has been registered as the world's first modal shift transportation project to generate carbon credits under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program. This project is projected to reduce approximately 1.7 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions over a 10-year period by shifting vehicle dispatches from road to rail. Verra will issue the carbon credits to Maruti Suzuki after independent verification. Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, highlighted this as a global benchmark in sustainable logistics, aligning with India's net-zero emissions goals. The facility at Hansalpur, Gujarat, was inaugurated by Narendra Modi in March 2024, and a larger railway siding at the Manesar facility was launched in June 2025 by Ashwini Vaishnaw and Nayab Singh Saini. The project also contributes to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
