Nigeria 2027 Election Timetable Revised

The Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission (Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission) in Nigeria has revised the timetable for the 2027 General Election, moving the presidential and Nigeria — National Assembly (Nigeria) polls to January 16, 2027, and the governorship and state assembly elections to February 6, 2027. This adjustment was necessitated by the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced new statutory timelines. President Bola Tinubu signed the new Electoral Act, 2026, into law on February 18. The previous election dates had drawn criticism from Muslim groups due to their coincidence with the fasting month of Ramadan. Additionally, the Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission rescheduled the Nigeria — Osun State governorship election from August 8, 2026, to August 15, 2026. The revised timetable, signed by Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, outlines key milestones including party primaries from April 23 to May 30, 2026, and campaign commencements in August and September 2026.
