Royal Professor Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas Dies

Royal Professor Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, a highly respected Islamic scholar and thinker, passed away at the age of 94 on March 8. His death was announced by Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), who described him as a priceless gem of knowledge for the Muslim community. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas was known for his contributions to Islamic civilization thought and played a role in establishing institutions such as the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the Institute of the Malay World and Civilisation (ATMA), and ISTAC. In October 2024, Ibrahim of Johor, the King of Malaysia, bestowed upon him the title of Royal Professor, the highest professorship in Malaysia, in recognition of his contributions to Islamic education. His funeral prayer was held at Al-Taqwa Mosque, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, and he was laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery on March 9, with notable attendees including Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
