The findings linking Semaglutide to a higher risk of sudden sight loss could negatively impact Novo Nordisk's stock performance and market share for its semaglutide drugs. Regulatory bodies like the United States — Food and Drug Administration may initiate further evaluations, potentially leading to stricter prescribing guidelines or warnings, which would affect the pharmaceutical industry.

New analysis published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology suggests that the weight-loss jab Semaglutide carries the highest risk of sudden sight loss, known as ischaemic optic neuropathy (Ion), compared to other semaglutide drugs like Semaglutide and Semaglutide. The study, based on side-effect alerts submitted to the United States — Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System, found that the odds of Ion were almost five times higher with Semaglutide than Semaglutide, and three times higher in men than women. Semaglutide was not associated with Ion. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of these drugs, stated that patient safety is a top priority and has updated EU patient leaflets to include non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), although the company believes the benefit-risk profile of semaglutide remains favorable.

Edward Margolin, a researcher from the University of Toronto, co-authored the study and stated that Naion is likely a real side effect of semaglutide, lending credibility to the findings.
