Instagram Ends End-to-End Encryption

Meta Platforms — Instagram, a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, will discontinue its end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging feature for direct messages starting May 8, 2026. This change means that Meta Platforms — Instagram will technically be able to access the content of user chats, a move that has raised concerns among privacy advocates. Meta Platforms stated that the decision was partly due to low user adoption of the optional E2EE feature and aims to improve detection of illegal content, such as Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), to comply with increasing global pressure on online safety. Users with affected chats will receive instructions to download their conversations and media before the deadline. While Meta Platforms — Instagram is removing this feature, Meta Platforms confirmed that E2EE remains supported on Meta Platforms — WhatsApp and Meta Platforms — Facebook Messenger.
