A modeling study published in 'The Lancet' journal suggests that rising temperatures due to climate change could lead to millions more adults globally becoming physically inactive by 2050. This increased inactivity is linked to an estimated 0.47–0.70 million additional premature deaths annually and US$ 2.40–3.68 billion in productivity losses. The study, which analyzed data from 156 countries between 2000 and 2022, predicts that each additional month with an average temperature above 27.8°C would increase physical inactivity by 1.5 percentage points globally, with a higher impact in low- and middle-income countries. Regions like 'Central African Republic', the 'Caribbean', 'Sub-Saharan Africa', and 'Southeast Asia' are projected to see the biggest increases. The 'World Health Organization's' target to cut physical inactivity could be undermined. Researchers, including those from 'Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina', emphasize the need for actions such as designing cooler cities and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to protect public health.
