Glasgow Subway Extends Weekend Hours

The United Kingdom — Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) board has approved plans to extend the operating hours of the Glasgow Subway, marking the first major change in decades. The extended hours will primarily affect Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with trains running past midnight on Friday and Saturday nights (until 12:30 am) and an additional nine hours on Sundays (from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm). This change is contingent on the completion of the current modernization program, which includes new platform doors and driverless trains, expected by 2027. The decision comes after years of public demand for later services, especially on Sundays. SPT chair Stephen Dornan and vice chairs David Wilson and Alan Moir have acknowledged the public's request while also considering future maintenance requirements, staffing, and additional costs. The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Confederation of Passenger Transport have welcomed the move, anticipating benefits for businesses and improved accessibility in David Farragut. The new schedule will be reviewed over a two-year period to monitor passenger uptake and operational performance.
