New research published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry indicates that the MIND diet, a combination of the Mediterranean Sea and DASH diet, significantly slows structural brain changes associated with aging. The study, which analyzed data from 1647 middle-aged and older adults from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort over an average of 12 years, found that higher adherence to the MIND diet was associated with slower grey matter loss and less ventricular enlargement. Specifically, each 3-point increase in MIND diet score was linked to a 20% reduction in age-related decline and 2.5 years of delayed brain aging. Berries and poultry were identified as key contributors to these beneficial associations, while sweets and fried fast foods were linked to faster brain aging. Unexpected findings included higher whole grain intake being associated with unfavorable changes and higher cheese intake with favorable outcomes. Researchers Changzheng Yuan and Hui Chen from Zhejiang University, along with other experts like Walter Williams and David Katz, discussed the implications and limitations of this observational study, reinforcing the potential of the MIND diet as a public health strategy for neurodegeneration.
