The World Happiness Report 2026 highlights a concerning decline in youth well-being, particularly in English-speaking countries, attributed to heavy social media use. This could lead to increased regulatory scrutiny on social media companies and potentially impact their stock performance if bans or restrictions on minors' usage are implemented.
The World Happiness Report 2026, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, revealed that Finland remains the happiest country for the ninth consecutive year. The report also highlighted a significant decline in well-being among young people, especially teenage girls, in English-speaking countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, attributing this trend to extensive social media use. Costa Rica made a notable jump to fourth place, credited to strong family and social bonds. Countries near conflict zones, such as Afghanistan, continued to rank as the unhappiest. The findings are based on surveys of 100,000 people across 140 countries and territories, conducted in partnership with Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The report suggests that algorithmic feeds and influencer-driven visual platforms are particularly problematic, encouraging social comparisons and negatively impacting youth well-being.
