The India — Jammu and Kashmir's Counter Intelligence Wing (CIK) and Cyber Investigation Unit of the Crime Branch (CIK-CID) successfully busted a sophisticated international cyber fraud racket operating from Srinagar. Seven suspects were arrested, and a large quantity of digital and communication equipment, including mobile phones, laptops, VoIP systems, and SIM cards, was seized. The syndicate established covert call centers, using VoIP-based systems to generate international virtual numbers and mask their real locations. They targeted victims in countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada through fake Yahoo! — Yahoo Mail websites and Alphabet Inc. advertisements, deceiving them into providing banking and personal details. The fraudulently obtained funds, estimated to be in several crores, were transferred into mule accounts and cryptocurrency wallets, primarily Tether (cryptocurrency) (USDT), and then layered multiple times to conceal their origin. No cash transactions were involved, indicating a fully digital and technologically advanced criminal operation. Investigations are ongoing to identify more victims, trace financial flows, and apprehend additional suspects, including those with national and international connections.
