The initiative by India to boost domestic rare earth magnet production is expected to reduce import dependence, particularly on China, and strengthen India's position in critical technology supply chains. This could lead to increased investment opportunities in India's manufacturing sector and potentially stabilize prices for industries reliant on these magnets.

India's India — Ministry of Heavy Industries has invited bids for establishing domestic manufacturing facilities for 6,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of rare earth permanent magnets. This move is part of a Rs 7,280-crore scheme, approved by the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2025, aimed at promoting the manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets. The scheme offers capital subsidies and sales-linked incentives to selected beneficiaries, with capacities ranging from 600 MTPA to 1,200 MTPA. The three lowest bidders will also receive an assured supply of NdPr oxide from NBCC (India) Limited. This initiative seeks to develop a complete domestic value chain for these critical components, reducing India's heavy reliance on imports, especially from China, which recently imposed export restrictions on rare earth elements.
