India's CJI on AI in Judiciary

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant emphasized the need to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the judicial system to enhance efficiency and reduce delays, while ensuring that human judgment remains central to decision-making. Speaking at a seminar co-organized by the Brewers Association of India and the National Law School of India University, Surya Kant cautioned against AI dominating the final stages of adjudication to maintain transparency and accountability. Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru also highlighted both the opportunities, such as predictive analysis and online dispute resolution, and the risks of AI potentially diminishing the role of judges. The event underscored the importance of safeguards to uphold judicial independence and legality in the age of AI, with Prashant Kumar of the Brewers Association of India noting AI's benefit in translating judgments for wider accessibility in India.
