The release of a Japanese national from Iran could be seen as a positive diplomatic development, potentially easing minor geopolitical tensions between Japan and Iran. However, the continued detention of another Japanese national means the situation remains unresolved, preventing a full positive market reaction.

Government Media

Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced that one of two Japanese nationals detained in Iran has been released and is returning to Japan. The individual was detained in 2025 and released on Wednesday, taking a flight from Azerbaijan. Toshimitsu Motegi had made repeated demands to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for the release of the detainees. The Committee to Protect Journalists identified the other Japanese national still in custody as an NHK journalist, who was arrested on January 20 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and transferred to Evin Prison on February 23. Japan's Foreign Ministry confirmed the detainees were safe and in good health but did not provide further details or confirm if the cases were related.
