Pakistan hikes high-octane fuel levy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan approved a significant increase in the levy on high-octane fuel, raising it from Rs100 per litre to Rs300 per litre. This decision aims to shift the financial burden to the wealthy class, generate approximately Rs9 billion in monthly savings for the government of Pakistan, and provide relief to the public. The government clarified that this increase will not affect the prices of fuel used in ordinary vehicles, public transport fares, or airline ticket prices. The decision was made during a video-link meeting attended by key ministers including Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Azam Nazeer Tarar.
