Forest Service Headquarters Moves to Utah

The Donald Trump administration announced a major organizational overhaul for the United States — United States Postal Service, including moving its headquarters from Washington, D.C., to United States — Salt Lake City, United States — Utah, by summer 2027. This initiative also involves shuttering research facilities in 31 states and consolidating research efforts in Fort Collins, Colorado. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz stated the move aims to bring leaders closer to the landscapes they manage. Approximately 260 positions will relocate, while 130 will remain in Washington. United States — Utah Governor Spencer Cox celebrated the move as a win for the state. However, environmental groups such as the Center for Biological Diversity and The Wilderness Society, represented by Taylor McKinnon and Josh Hicks respectively, criticized the decision, viewing it as a 'costly bureaucratic reshuffle' that could undermine the agency's effectiveness, lead to less access to public forests, and threaten wildlife habitats. They also drew parallels to the previous relocation of the United States — Bureau of Land Management, which was later reversed by the Biden administration. U.S. Representatives Teresa Leger Fernández and Celeste Maloy offered differing perspectives, with Maloy welcoming the move for its potential to improve wildfire responsiveness.
