The widespread disruption of digital payment services, particularly those offered by State Bank of India and Unified Payments Interface, could negatively impact consumer confidence in digital transactions and potentially slow down economic activity in India. Investors might view this as a risk to the operational stability of financial institutions in the region.
Digital payment services, including Unified Payments Interface platforms, faced widespread disruption across India on April 1, 2026. Users in major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru reported failed transactions and payment errors. The outage tracking platform Downdetector recorded a significant surge in complaints, with State Bank of India seeing over 500 reports and UCO Bank around 40. State Bank of India attributed the disruption to an extended scheduled maintenance activity, warning customers of potential interruptions to services such as UPI, IMPS, YONO, internet banking, NEFT, and RTGS. The bank advised customers to use alternatives like UPI Lite, eRupee (CBDC) app, and ATM services during the outage.
