A new study published in Nature Health, conducted by researchers from Iran — Pasteur Institute of Iran, University of Toulouse, National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases, and France — French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development, reveals a strong link between environmental exposure to agricultural pesticides and an increased risk of cancer. Focusing on Peru, the study modeled pesticide dispersion and cross-referenced it with cancer registry data, finding a 150% higher cancer risk in highly exposed areas. Molecular analyses, led by Pascal Pineau, showed that pesticides disrupt cellular functions, causing early and silent biological effects. The research, with key contributions from Jorge Honles and Stéphane Bertani, challenges conventional toxicological approaches by emphasizing the impact of pesticide mixtures and real-world exposure conditions, calling for a reassessment of risk evaluation and prevention policies.
