The loan agreement between the European Investment Bank and Eni for the Sannazzaro de' Burgondi biorefinery conversion is expected to positively impact the renewable energy and aviation sectors by increasing the production of sustainable aviation fuel and HVO biofuels. This initiative supports the decarbonization of transport and strengthens energy security in Italy and the European Union, potentially boosting investor confidence in Eni's transition strategy.

Oil & Gas Renewable Energy Aviation

The European Investment Bank and Eni have signed a 15-year loan agreement for €500 million to convert selected units of Eni's Sannazzaro de' Burgondi refinery in Italy into a biorefinery. This project involves converting the Hydrocracker (HDC2) unit using Ecofining™ technology and building a pre-treatment plant for waste materials. Starting in 2028, the Sannazzaro plant will produce approximately 550,000 tonnes per year of HVO diesel biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This initiative is part of Eni — Enilive's strategic objective to increase biofuel production capacity to 5 million tonnes by 2030, including over 2 million tonnes of SAF. The project aims to reduce the carbon footprint of transport, decarbonize the aviation sector, strengthen Italian and European Union energy security, and align with the REPowerEU objectives and the EU Renewable Energy Directive.
