Vice President Kashim Shettima officially launched Africa's first University Innovation Pods (UniPods) at the University of Lagos on April 7, 2026. This initiative, a collaboration between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Nations Development Programme, aims to transform Nigerian universities into Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation and digital talent hubs. The UniPods are designed to bridge the gap between formal education and labor market demands by providing platforms for developing, testing, financing, and translating ideas into viable enterprises. The rollout begins with an AI-focused UniPod at University of Lagos, with plans to expand to over 50 universities nationwide, including institutions in Nigeria — Abia State, Nigeria — Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health, Nigeria — Nasarawa State, Nigeria — Benue State, and Nigeria — Borno State, focusing on various sectors like mining, green economy, manufacturing, agriculture, and resilience. The program, operationalized under the National Innovation and Digital Transformation Partnership Programme (NIDTPP) with Nigeria — Tertiary Education Trust Fund, aims to equip over 500,000 learners with advanced digital and AI skills and support 1,500-2,000 startups, positioning Nigeria as a continental leader in building a knowledge-driven economy under President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
