Cocoa Bean Price Volatility
Analysis based on 33 articles · First reported Apr 01, 2026 · Last updated Apr 16, 2026
Cocoa bean prices are experiencing significant volatility, primarily driven by a combination of increased supplies from Ivory Coast and weak global demand for chocolate, leading to a bearish outlook. However, drought concerns in West Africa and geopolitical issues affecting shipping costs provide some bullish counterpoints, creating a mixed market environment for Cocoa bean futures.
Cocoa bean prices are highly volatile, with recent declines driven by increased supplies from Ivory Coast, which shipped 1.45 MMT of cocoa to ports, up 0.7% year-over-year. Weak chocolate demand, evidenced by a projected 5% decline in Easter candy sales and significant drops in Q4 European and Asian cocoa grindings reported by the European Cocoa Association and Cocoa Association of Asia, further pressures prices. Barry Callebaut also reported a 22% decline in sales volume in its cocoa division. Conversely, drought conditions in Ivory Coast and Ghana, which produce over half of the world's cocoa, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which increases shipping and fertilizer costs, offer some support to prices. Nigeria's increased exports also contribute to the supply, while the International Cocoa Organization raised its 2024/25 global cocoa surplus estimate. Rabobank and StoneX Group Inc. have also provided varying surplus forecasts, indicating an uncertain future for Cocoa bean prices.
