Lagos State Inmate Release

Nigeria — Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional centers in Nigeria — Lagos State on April 2, 2026. This action, announced by Lawal Pedro, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, is part of ongoing efforts to ease prison overcrowding and strengthen the criminal justice system. The decision was made under the governor's constitutional powers of prerogative of mercy, following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. This follows a similar release of 91 inmates in December 2025. Nigeria — Lagos State is also investing in improving correctional facilities by procuring buses for the Nigeria — Nigeria Correctional Service and renovating buildings. Lawal Pedro has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to transfer control of one of the correctional facilities in Nigeria — Lagos State to the Nigeria — Lagos State Government to address issues like weak oversight and inadequate funding.
