Global Coffee Price Volatility
Analysis based on 32 articles · First reported Apr 01, 2026 · Last updated Apr 22, 2026
Coffee prices are experiencing significant volatility due to a combination of factors. Expectations of a record coffee crop in Brazil and soaring exports from Vietnam are creating downward pressure on prices, while below-normal rainfall in Brazil and the disruption of global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz are providing upward support. The strength of the Brazil — Brazilian real also plays a role by discouraging exports.
The global coffee market is currently experiencing significant price fluctuations driven by a complex interplay of supply and demand factors. On the supply side, forecasts from Marex Group, Sucafina, StoneX Group Inc., National Supply Company (Conab), and Rabobank all point to a record or near-record coffee crop in Brazil for the 2026/27 season, suggesting an abundance of Coffea arabica. Similarly, Vietnam, a major robusta producer, has reported soaring coffee exports, further contributing to increased supply. However, these bearish factors are being counteracted by several bullish elements. Below-normal rainfall in Brazil's key arabica-growing region, Brazil — Minas Gerais, raises concerns about potential yield reductions. Additionally, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, following actions by Iran and the United States, has disrupted global shipping, leading to increased costs for coffee importers and roasters and tightening global supplies. The strength of the Brazil — Brazilian real also discourages exports from Brazil, providing some support for coffee prices. ICE robusta inventories have fallen to multi-month lows, indicating tightness in robusta supplies, while arabica inventories have risen. Brazil's recent green coffee export figures, as reported by Cecafe and Brazil's Trade Ministry, show a decline, further adding to the complexity of the market dynamics.
