Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) and Coal India — Eastern Coalfields (MCL) have signed a landmark land leasing agreement for India's first indigenous Coal to Ammonium Nitrate Project at Lakhanpur, Odisha. This ₹25,000 crore project, spread over 350 acres of MCL land, will produce 2000 TPD of ammonium nitrate using technology developed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The India — Ministry of Coal has supported the initiative with ₹1,350 crore in financial incentives and policy reforms allowing the use of Coal Bearing Area land for gasification. Major Lump Sum Turnkey (LSTK) contracts have been awarded to BHEL (LSTK-1 and LSTK-2) and Larsen & Toubro (LSTK-3 and LSTK-4). Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy emphasized the project's alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, aiming to reduce India's import dependence and strengthen indigenous capabilities. The Cabinet has approved an ₹8,500 crore outlay for coal gasification, with seven projects finalized. The project is expected to accelerate industrial growth and economic resilience in India.
