UK Army AI Drone Trial

The United Kingdom — Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, on behalf of the United Kingdom — British Army, successfully trialed AI-powered drone technology for the rapid detection of landmines and explosive ordnance. This innovation aims to enhance the safety and efficiency of bomb-disposal experts and better protect United Kingdom — British Army personnel on the battlefield. The trial, conducted with 33 Engineer Regiment in Essex, demonstrated the ability to rapidly retrain AI models for new threats and environments. Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, emphasized that this trial aligns with the United Kingdom's Strategic Defence Review, which includes doubling investment in autonomous platforms from £2bn to £4bn. Further trials are planned to mature the technology and guide procurement, with the goal of increasing the United Kingdom — British Army's lethality over the next decade, drawing lessons from conflicts like that in Ukraine.
