Researchers at North Carolina State University, led by Navya Mishra, Amay Bandodkar, and Albert Keung, have developed a new low-cost, scalable sensor called CAMEO (Conformal Array for Monitoring Electrophysiology of Organoids). This device uses carbon nanotubes to monitor electrical activity in human cerebral organoids, which are millimeter-sized tissues used to study brain function and genetic disorders like Angelman syndrome. Current sensors are expensive, limiting studies to small sample sizes. CAMEO's affordability and ease of manufacturing will enable large-scale studies, providing more robust data for understanding neurodevelopment and developing treatments. The project received funding from the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics and the United States — National Science Foundation, and the intellectual property for CAMEO is being protected.
