Ireland Defence Forces Lebanon Rotation

Helen McEntee, the Minister for Defence, cancelled her trip to Lebanon due to security advice from the Defence Forces amid heightened clashes between the Israeli military and Hezbollah. This cancellation, however, allowed the Defence Forces to conduct its first strategic personnel rotation in a conflict zone using its new Airbus C295 transport aircraft. The operation involved transporting key battalion personnel and returning communication specialists to and from Camp Shamrock and Beirut Airport, demonstrating increased flexibility and operational reach. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) mission, in which Irish peacekeepers are deployed, is facing ongoing security challenges, with a Polish member of Ireland's joint battalion sustaining injuries and three Indonesian peacekeepers killed in separate incidents. The Defence Forces is also actively planning for the conclusion of the Unifil mission and withdrawal from Lebanon, with the UN Security Council mandate expiring on December 31.
