Engineers in Japan — Fukuoka, Japan, in partnership with Kyowakiden Industry, have opened the world's second osmotic power plant. This plant harnesses the natural process of osmosis, using treated sewage water and concentrated seawater (a waste product from Japan — Fukuoka's desalination plant) to generate electricity. The system, which came online last August, cost 700 million yen ($4.4 million) and is expected to generate 880,000 kilowatts annually, enough for 300 households. While currently more expensive than other energy sources, the technology is seen as promising due to its independence from weather conditions. Tetsuro Ueyama of Kyowakiden Industry envisions scaling up these plants and expanding the technology to other nations with large desalination facilities, like Saudi Arabia, and eventually using ordinary seawater.
