The approval of the N3.3 trillion debt settlement by Bola Tinubu is expected to stabilize power generation and improve electricity reliability in Nigeria. This move is projected to attract fresh investments, create jobs, and enhance service delivery within the power sector, positively impacting the broader Nigerian economy.
President Bola Tinubu has approved a comprehensive N3.3 trillion payment plan to settle long-standing debts in Nigeria's power sector, accumulated between February 2015 and March 2025. This initiative, part of the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme, aims to stabilize generation capacity, improve electricity reliability, and attract investments. The Federal Government of Nigeria has already raised N501 billion, with N223 billion disbursed, and 15 power plants have signed settlement agreements totaling N2.3 trillion. Special Advisers Bayo Onanuga and Olu Arowolo-Verheijen highlighted that this program is crucial for restoring confidence in the power sector, ensuring gas suppliers are paid, and supporting economic growth through reliable electricity for businesses and homes. The next phase of the program, Series II, is expected to commence this quarter.
